Public Engagement Training Programme for Humanities and Arts Postgraduate Researchers  -  Culture Campus HAPPEN   
- Applications invited for programme commencing  31 January 2011

HAPPEN (Humanities and Arts PGRs Public Engagement Network) is a public engagement training programme for postgraduate research students (PGRs) from across the North West.

It offers opportunities for students to engage with world-class cultural institutions in the region, and participate in a structured, public engagement-centred series of events with established national and international standing, working with the public, cultural/creative industries, small and medium enterprises and local community groups.
 
Culture Campus is a cross-sector partnership chaired by the Director of Tate Liverpool with membership drawn from universities of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores, Liverpool Hope, Tate Liverpool, Liverpool Biennial, FACT, Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium (LARC) - an alliance of eight of the city’s cultural organisations http://www.larc.uk.com The Culture Campus Board, working with the Project’s Principal Investigator, Dr Mark Llewellyn, will provide overall direction, support and mentoring for students on the programme.
 
A typical programme will include: a 3 day internship with shadowing of cultural organisation staff, presentation at research seminars held by cultural organisations, engagement with specific community groups on learning and helping meet their areas of interest with the cultural organisation in a community group setting,
HAPPEN will:
• enhance the awareness of Humanities and Arts Postgraduate Research students across the region of the potential contribution their research can make to society outside the academy;
• open up fresh perspectives on PGR projects, widen the horizons of PGRs, the public and cultural sector organisations;
• provide quality public engagement training to support the research community through enhancement of institutional experience, improved standards and dissemination of good practice models;
• build on existing collaborations and develop new networks to provide innovative ways of reaching a wider range to audiences that provide opportunities to put research knowledge into practical and enhancing PGR experience and career planning;
• improve the skills of PGRs and ECRs in communicating their work to different audiences, through networking and influencing that is based in high quality research knowledge;
• support researchers in sharing best practice and provide opportunities for critically constructive feedback;
• provide opportunities to develop awareness of the embedded relevance, impact, legitimacy and reputation of PGR activity to the regional economy, and contribution to the well-being of society.
 
Start: January 2011, with launch event for successful applicants on 31 January 2011, PM.
 
Funding: The AHRC grant for this project covers travel expenses for PGR students to undertake internship days with cultural organisations.
Programme timetable

January 2011:
• Induction event, initial mentoring and ‘public engagement toolkit’ development (attended by Director of Postgraduate Programmes at the AHRC)
February – September 2011:
• Tailored programme for individual PGRs working with cultural organisations and community groups. This period will include regular mentorship meetings with Principal Investigator and other academic leaders as well as cultural institution partners.
 
September/October:
• Reflective phase involving consolidation of public engagement skills and experience; creation of Public Engagement for PGRs report by Principal Investigator and participants.
