Liverpool John Moores University is investing in a number of major initiatives that will transform Liverpool’s cultural and creative milieu, bolster the region’s creative industries sector and resonate far beyond the banks of the river Mersey .

The development of LJMU’s new £23.5 million Art and Design Academy exemplifies how the University is working to consolidate its position as a cultural leader in the region. Due to open in 2008 when Liverpool is European Capital of Culture, the Academy will bring all of LJMU’s art and design programmes together in a stimulating new space, enabling more creative forms of teaching and research. Supported by the Merseyside Objective One programme, it will also offer new facilities and services to the region's creative industries sector.

Thanks to the University’s close links with the BBC, Channel 4, Granada, Liverpool Tate, FACT, National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, EMAP, Trinity Mirror and other leading organisations, LJMU is able to keep its courses professionally relevant and up-to-date while also giving students exceptional placement opportunities.

Knowledge transfer initiatives are also helping LJMU harness its recognised strengths in fashion and textiles, product design, multimedia and graphic arts, digital content, film and television production and to contribute to the region’s emerging creative and cultural industries.

LJMU has always been quick to grasp technological solutions, and the launch of the new Liverpool Screen School demonstrates how the University is embracing the seismic shifts in digital technology that have changed how we engage and interact with, not just films, TV and radio but also the internet, mobile phones and games consoles. The new School has the backing of the BBC, Granada , FACT, EMAP and Trinity Mirror as well as leading figures such as Phil Redmond, co-founder of Mersey Television.

The development marks the next stage in the University’s drive to become a national centre of excellence in all aspects of digital technology. LJMU’s International Centre for Digital Content (ICDC) was formed in 2001 and this is now a world leader in digital content design and solutions. LJMU also launched the ’s first business incubator for the digital industries, DigitalINC, which has an excellent track record in attracting and retaining technology companies in Merseyside as well as supporting entrepreneurial graduates.
